The GCC Plaid has been officially registered with the Scottish Register of Tartans on February 19, 2016. Reference #11468. Also a pending copyright with the U.S. Copyright Act for the tartan design has been filed.

The background, rationale and history for the tartan:

Founded in 1966, Genesee Community College is located in upstate New York amidst the rural countryside. GCC annually serves approximately 6,500 students with more than 65 academic programs. Fashion Business is arguably the institution’s signature program featuring four different degrees or certificates, and the annual Fashion Show celebrating its 35th performance in 2016. As the largest professional fashion show in Western NY, it is 100% student produced and typically involves 100 models and hundreds of volunteers. GCC’s vibrant Fashion program is further illustrated by challenging students to create a unique plaid pattern that would exemplify the College’s brand, “Beyond Expectations.” The plaid design competition was open to all GCC students and alumni, and contestants were directed to use the official colors, logo, fonts or other GCC branding elements. The winning entry was the work of a GCC alumnus who researched the intricacies of plaid design, and selected the color scheme dating back to the College’s first Dean of Students, Dr. Stuart Steiner, who then served as GCC’s president for 37 years! The plaid will play an exciting role in celebrating GCC’s 50th Anniversary, and recognizing GCC as one of the few community colleges to design and register its own tartan.
